Why do we procrastinate?
It is almost like a guilty pleasure or a frenemy we love to hang out with. I should know. I used to be the queen of waiting until the last-minute for many important things. I would especially wait until the last-minute for things I really did not enjoy doing, but knew they must get done. The sad part is I would many times have plenty of time to get things done, but it’s like this little demon was whispering in my ear and coaching me to wait until I had just the right amount of NOT ENOUGH TIME!
Sometimes it was even a bit of an adrenaline rush to see if I could pull it off and I did about 80% of the time. Although, many times I did not make the deadline; whether it was a doctor’s appointment, class assignment, making dinner, etc… I would even lie to myself and tell myself there’s not enough time.
Well one day I decided this has to stop. Yes, I’m getting things done, but how much more efficient could I be if I stopped the procrastination? Also, make no mistake many successful people are covert procrastinators. I should know, I was one. To others I seemed rather efficient, but I knew I had a problem. Then there came a day when my responsibilities increased and I had more things to do, so if I continued this path of, “I bet I can trick time!!,” I would fail miserably and I knew it. It was time to face my demon and kick it to the curb!!!!
I was about to commit murder, Last Minute Lucy had danced her last tango with me!!! Here are five weapons to kill the procrastinator in you…
- Be honest
with you: Admit to yourself that the father of procrastination is pure laziness. God already knows, so you might as well come clean. “The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” -Proverbs 13:4
- Repent: Repentance is POWERFUL! Tell The Lord you are sorry and you do not want this in your life anymore and ask Him to help you overcome this wicked habit. Afterall, it’s keeping you from doing great things!♥
- Resolve that you will tackle the hard things first and foremost! Be brave, Get’er done! (In my redneck voice…lol)
- Become a Planner: Start planning out your weeks and/or days ahead of time and stick with it. This will make a big difference in your life and it’s kind of fun and will make you feel more productive. You will be a manager of your time instead of your time being your attacker! (Find me on Instagram. I have a lot of encouragement for organization and planning, @Inspirational_Pink )
Accountability: Last, but not least, grab yourself a couple of accountability partners to hold you accountable! The bible tells us to confess our faults one to another that we may be healed(James 5:16)! Accountability is healing. Make sure it’s someone you can’t intimidate into shutting up and leaving you alone, but who will encourage you to stick to your goal!
When you seriously implement these weapons to destroy the procrastinator in you, you will see amazing results that will lead you to victory! Remember change is sometimes a journey and even if you fall off the horse, the faster you get back up and begin again, the better. You can never be perfect, but you can always Be Better!
